  • Maximum weight must not exceed 10kg per person

SECURITY UPDATE, carrying liquids, hand baggage restrictions...etc.
(taken from www.dft.gov.uk)

These guidelines are applicable for all Monarch flights.

Liquids

Some liquids are allowed through airport security check points. There are however, restrictions on the quantity of liquids that can be taken through:

Passengers may carry small quantities of liquids, but only within separate containers each of which with a capacity not greater than 100ml.

These containers must be brought to the airport contained in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag (about the size of a small freezer bag), which itself must not exceed 1 litre in capacity (approximately 20cm x 20cm). The contents of the plastic bag must fit comfortably and the bag sealed. Each passenger may carry only one such bag of liquids which must fit comfortably within the single permitted item of hand baggage.

The bag must be presented separately for examination at the airport security point.

Please note:

  • Any containers larger than 100ml (excluding essential medicines, see section below) will NOT be allowed through the security search point.
  • Most liquids of any amount may still be carried in hold baggage.
  • One lighter per person may be carried through central search. Lighters form part of the allowance of liquid in the litre bag and can either be placed inside the litre bag or screened separately provided they would fit into the bag. It is very important that passengers do not place the lighter into their cabin bag after screening - it must be carried on the person for the duration of the flight. Lighters are NOT permitted in hold baggage.
Remember that 'Liquids' includes:
  • All drinks, including water, soup, syrups
  • Creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara etc
  • Sprays and pressurized containers including shaving foam and spray deodorants
  • Pastes, including toothpastes
  • Gels, including hair and shower gel
  • Any other solutions and items of similar consistency

Please note that liquids can usually be purchased beyond airport security search points, in the departures area, as these liquids are subject to a separate screening process.

Essential medicines

Essential medicines for the period of the trip may be permitted in larger quantities above the 100ml limit, but will be subject to authentication. Passengers must have obtained the prior agreement of the airline with which they are travelling and their departure airport. Passengers must also bring with them supporting documentation from a relevant qualified medical professional.

Essential medical equipment

Passengers are permitted to carry through airport security medical equipment essential for use during the period of their trip. Where possible the equipment should be contained within the ONE item of cabin baggage and again should be accompanied by supporting documentation from a relevant qualified medical professional.

Baby Food

Liquid baby food or sterilised water, sufficient for the journey, can be taken through airport security. The accompanying adult will be required to verify by tasting.

Essential Liquid Dietary Foodstuffs

Liquid dietary foodstuffs which are deemed essential can be taken through airport security and will be subject to verification by the passenger.

Laptops / electrical items

Laptops and other large electrical items (e.g. a large hairdryer) have to be removed from cabin baggage and screened separately. A laptop bag that is not contained within the one piece of cabin baggage is regarded as the one allowable item of cabin baggage.

excess baggage

Any additional hold baggage carried in excess of the above allowances may be subject to excess baggage charges on a per kg basis.

Please note that the maximum single item baggage weight that will be accepted at any of our UK airports is 32kg (70lb). Any single bag weighing more than this will not be accepted at check-in. This restriction has been brought into place by the Airport Authorities following consultation with airlines, handling companies and unions to help reduce the manual handling injuries amongst airport staff.

Monarch's current excess baggage rates are set out below:

  • Shorthaul flights - £6 (GBP) / €7,50 (EUR) per kg
  • Longhaul flights - £10 (GBP) / €15 (EUR) or agreed equivalent in local currency per kg
  • Flights from USA/Dominican Republic/Maldives - $20 (USD) per kg
  • Note - Longhaul includes Egypt, Kenya, Banjul and Israel

Excess baggage is accepted subject to hold space and operational capacity.

Items exceeding stated allowance will be subject to standard excess baggage rates.

All other items are treated as part of the normal baggage allowance, any items exceeding the standard baggage allowance will be charged as excess baggage.

All Sports equipment is carried subject to hold space and weight available.

Bicycles, Hang gliders, Windsurf boards, Canoes & Kayaks = £30 per sector. Limited to one bag /item at a max weight of 32kgs. If you wish to take additional board-bags/sail bags additional per sector charges apply. We only accept windsurfers, canoes, kayaks or hangliders if the total length (including the mast) is less than 3.8 metres. The size of the hold does not permit bigger items and we will therefore refuse transport of any items that exceed this limit.

Please make every effort to protect your bicycle - we recommend the use of a bicycle bag with padding for added protection. Handlebars must be turned inwards, pedals removed or turned inwards, tyres deflated and the bicycle must be wrapped in plastic or cardboard.

Space in the hold for Bicycles, Hang Gliders, Windsurf Boards, Canoes and Kayaks cannot be pre-booked and must be paid for at the airport. To reserve a space within the aircraft hold for all other sports equipment equipment, you need to pre-book your item. Our aircraft hold space is limited and we have a restriction on the amount of equipment that we can accommodate. If you do not pre-book items that are pre-bookable, we will only accept your equipment if there is sufficient room in the aircraft hold and you will have to pay the appropriate fee at the airport.

Please make every effort to secure your golf clubs and other sports equipment - we recommend that zipper type compartments are padlocked.

The transport of individual golf clubs as hand baggage is not permitted. If you wish to carry just one or two clubs, we recommend that they are protected in a padded box for carriage in the hold of the aircraft.

We recommend that passengers have insurance cover for the replacement value of all their sports equipment.

lost bags

Don't forget - if your bags are lost you can use our new online baggage tracing facility (Worldtracer). Just enter the PIR number, given to you when you reported your baggage as lost, along with your surname and the Worldtracer online baggage tracing system will do the rest!

If your bags are lost you should have completed a Property Irregularity Report Form at the airport. Monarch Airlines ground handling agents will search for your luggage for 7 days.

The majority of luggage is located within this time and will be delivered to the address you have specified on your report, by a local courier. You will need to contact the handling agent for updated information; details of the phone number will be on your copy of Property Irregularity Report.

Monarch Airlines will conduct a search for your luggage for a total period of 21 days.

other baggage faqs

if I book an extra seat (for comfort or any other reason) and pay for extra hold baggage without another passenger flying, can I use 2 baggage allowances?
No, all hold and hand baggage allowances are per person and therefore an empty extra seat will have no baggage allowance associated with it.

can you combine your hold luggage allowance?
Yes, subject to payment of applicable hold baggage charges, your hold allowance can be shared between your traveling group as long as any 1 item of luggage does not weigh more than 32kg. Please note hand and hold baggage allowances cannot be combined.

can you take a buggy/pram/travel cot into the cabin?
Buggies and pushchairs can be used right up to the aircraft steps at which point they will be put into the hold area of the aircraft. These can be collected on the baggage carousel in the arrival destination's airport

where should you pack aerosols and electrical items?
Electrical items such as hairdryers, etc and aerosols can be packed in your hold baggage.

if you're getting married abroad, is there anywhere to hang your wedding dress in the cabin?
Unfortunately we do not have any facility on-board our aircraft to hang wedding dresses. These should be either packed within the dimensions of hand baggage to be carried on-board, or packed for carriage in the hold. There is no additional baggage allowance given for wedding attire.

Can I travel with my musical instrument?
If you wish to take your musical instrument onboard the aircraft for storage in the overhead locker, it can be carried as hand baggage, but not in addition to your standard hand-baggage allowance. You must ensure that it complies with our weight and size restrictions for hand baggage – explained within our hand-baggage guidelines and your instrument should be safely housed in its own carry case.

Larger instruments may be transported in the hold of the aircraft in a suitable case – excess charges and baggage fees may apply. Alternatively, you may purchase an extra seat for your musical instrument, provided it fits comfortably into the dimensions of a single, standard aircraft seat and can be strapped in using a normal seatbelt. For further information regarding carriage of musical instruments please contact one of our reservations team. Additional seats for musical instruments will need to be purchased via reservations or your tour operator – pre booked seat fees may apply.

can you carry a shot gun on a Monarch flight?
Yes, but Guns must be dismantled or rendered inoperable and must be carried in a suitable case. A shotgun/police certificate must be carried by the passenger.

All sporting guns will be loaded in the hold area of the aircraft.

Please contact us, if you intend to travel with such an item so that a note can be made in your booking.

what do you do if your baggage is damaged during a flight?
If you have reported the damage before leaving the airport and obtained a Property Irregularity Report Form, you will need to contact Monarch Airlines Head Office on telephone number 08444815496. Our agents will arrange to send you a claim form or arrange for the item to be replaced.

If you did not report the damage before leaving the airport, please write to Monarch Airlines claims department on the address below, within 7 days of your return.

Monarch Airlines Ltd
Baggage Services Dept
Prospect House, Prospect Way

what do you do if items are missing from your baggage?
You will need to write to Monarch Airlines within 7 days of your return (see address above), providing your flight details and a list of the items missing. Monarch Airlines do not accept liability for the loss or partial loss of fragile or perishable items, items having special value e.g. money, jewellery, precious metals, computers, personal electronic devices, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents, or samples.

In view of these conditions we suggest that you contact your travel insurers in the first instance, as your policy should have more comprehensive cover than offered by the airline under the Montreal Convention.

Your insurers may require you to report this incident to the Police.

is your baggage insured?
Liability for lost and damaged baggage is limited under the Montreal Convention which governs airlines around the world. We would always recommend that you contact your own insurance company as your policy may be more comprehensive than that of our liability under the Montreal Convention (please see our 'terms and conditions'), so please make sure you are adequately insured before you travel.

what do you do if you have left something on the Aircraft?
If you have left an item on one of our aircraft, please contact the relevant handling agent's lost property department. They are solely responsible for recording and storing any items found on-board. Monarch Airlines head-office is unable to assist in locating found property items. Monarch Airlines does not accept any liability for the loss of passengers personal belongings, therefore we suggest that you contact your own travel insurers.
