Mahon, is the capital of Menorca – Mallorca’s little sister and a beautiful bustling port on a huge natural harbour. With almost as many beaches as Majorca and Ibiza combined, it’s ideal for a chilled-out break.
Rest your head in small fishing village Es Grau, 3miles north of Mahon. With gleaming white buildings on quaint narrow streets and secluded horseshoe-shaped beach. Villa Carlos sleeps eight, has pool and roof terrace (www.vintagetravel.co.uk), or pamper yourself at swanky Hotel Capri in Mahon itself (www.rtmhotels.com, with its sexy spa you’ll sleep like a baby.
Grab your flippers and go snorkelling at Cala Blanca. It’s got an enclosed sheltered bay with dozens of colourful fish. And if you’re lucky, you’ll catch shoals of hunting Mediterranean barracuda in the evening too. Hire your gear from British-run dive school (www.divecalablanca.com).
Be a spendthrift along the main road from Mahon to Cuitadella. It’s jam-packed with handmade leather shoe shops, so grab yourself a one-off Spanish bargain.
Take a trip to posh village Fornells – it’s King Juan Carlos of Spain's favourite spot for lobster and is easily the prettiest place on the island. The harbour is awash with yachts and fish restaurants, while the village is quiet and elegant.
Then sample the seafood in the island’s best restaurant Es Pla (also in Fornells). Stylish and airy it’s perched on the rocks with amazing views, has a long stainless-steel bar area and a mouth-watering fish menu.
Round off your trip with a bit of opera at the Mahon’s Teatre Principal (www.teatremao.org). They have a season on each summer, so you’re bound to catch the best baritones and tenors.
